SPRINGTIME CONCERTS WITH SYDNEY CHILDREN’S CHOIR AND SYDNEY GONDWANA INDIGENOUS CHILDREN’S CHOIRS
11th September saw the annual Sydney Children’s Choir Springtime Concerts, held this year in the Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. With so many choirs and choristers, the concerts were split into two, the first at 11am followed by another at 3pm. Joining SCC at 3pm were both Sydney-based Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choirs, Campbelltown and our newest ensemble from Inner-Sydney.
The highlight of the concerts were the premieres of new works commissioned as part of Sydney Children’s Choir’s cultural partnership with the Barangaroo Delivery Authority. As part of this partnership, choristers visited the Barangaroo Headland park to learn about the natural and human history of the site. Following these visits, 2016 SCC Composer in Residence Alice Chance wrote five new works written especially for each level of Sydney Children’s Choir. Gondwana Choirs is committed to commissioning and presenting of work, keeping choristers connected with contemporary music while enhancing their musical skills and supporting developing Australian composers.
Springtime Concerts also give choristers and their families the chance to observe choirs from different levels and stages of development and witness the growth of musical and vocal skills as choristers move through the choir levels.
Gondwana Choirs could not put on concerts such as this without the generous support of our many parent supervisors. Thank you to all who not only looked after the choirs on concert day, but at every rehearsal, camp and extra performance in term 3.
