PREPARE FOR SOMETHING NEW
WHAT IS A CAPPELLA ACADEMY?
A Cappella Academy is a new concept to debut at Gondwana National Choral School in 2017. It will be led by the internationally-acclaimed Australian vocal quartet The Idea of North, who will be in residence for the whole of NCS. They will work daily with each of the new choirs on a modern history of A Cappella music – everything from Dixieland jazz, the Andrews Sisters, Bee Gees, Abba, Queen, Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child and Pitch Perfect.
WHY THE CHANGE?
Gondwana Chorale is touring to the USA directly after NCS, which means that the choir members have already been confirmed and NCS will be their intensive rehearsal period. Gondwana Voices is touring in July 2017 and will have their intensive rehearsal period in April. Therefore, Voices members who are going on tour are not required to attend NCS.
WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
Because of these two major tours, the structure of the choirs at NCS2017 will be different to usual. Instead of singing in one choir for the duration of choral school, everyone (apart from Junior Gondwana and Chorale) will be in at least two ensembles: one for traditional Gondwana repertoire, led by our outstanding artistic staff, and one for the A Cappella Academy with The Idea of North. You might even find yourself part of a new boy or girl band!
WHAT’S THE SAME?
Within your two or more ensembles you will have the chance to work with the Gondwana Choirs’ Artistic Staff for about 50% of the rehearsal time. (The other 50% will be spent in your a cappella ensemble with The Idea of North). So in many ways, the range of repertoire covered at NCS2017 will be more extensive than normal!
Junior Gondwana will run as usual, developing our youngest choristers’ skills such as intonation and sight singing through diverse and challenging repertoire. Junior will of course also be part of A Cappella Academy, taking part in workshops with The Idea of North.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
All singers aged 10-25 are welcome to apply, as normal. Even if you are aged 18 – 25 and are not touring with Chorale, you are still welcome you to audition as there will be a host of fabulous choiral singing, both in A Cappella Academy and in more traditional SATB Gondwana repertoire.
The two international tours give us the opportunity to create a more flexible approach to the makeup of the new ensembles. Focusing on modern A Cappella music in NCS2017 will expose each chorister to many new styles and we predict that it will be enormous fun!
WHEN DO APPLICATIONS CLOSE?
Due to high volume, applications will remain open unti Monday 22 August
